Even the city of Bikini Bottom isn't immune to fake news. Over the weekend, a cruel rumor surfaced that Nickelodeon's long-running SpongeBob SquarePants would be ending on March 1, apparently thanks to a photshopped tweet that was doctored to look like it originated from the show's official account.
But SpongeBob hasn't been cancelled -- the show was renewed for Season 12 last May, ensuring that we'll get at least another 26 episodes featuring our favorite aquatic absorber and his chums after the show completes its current season.
This isn't even the first time someone has spread false rumors about SpongeBob ending -- it also happened in 2013 and 2016, because apparently some people just want to watch the world burn.

But a quick glance at the show's official Twitter account should lay fears to rest -- it's full of adorable tweets from 'SpongeBob,' with nary a mention of the show's alleged demise, despite panicked fans asking for answers.
ARE YOU CANCELING MARCH 1ST TELL ME THIS IS A LIE

So rest easy, SpongeBob fans -- if and when Nickelodeon ever decides to cancel their longest-running show (we can't see it happening any time soon), you'll be able to find an official announcement from the show's social handles, not to mention confirmed news stories from entertainment sites. And when that sad day eventually comes, there's still plenty of SpongeBob Squarepants episodes online, enough for one insane marathon watch-through. Happy swimming.
