9/30/2013 These days, the studio is as much a part of music making as the musician. Logic Pro X combines the best of both worlds: features to bring fresh musical ideas to life, and tools to derive the most from a performance. In this course, Scott Hirsch takes you over the Logic learning curve, showing how to compose, record, edit, and mix great sounding tracks. First, get comfortable with the setup and workflow, and then learn how to record audio, MIDI, and virtual instruments. Scott shows how to use samples and Apple Loops, and conform their time and pitch to better fit a song. Next, learn about editing and arranging techniques for both audio and MIDI data. Moving deeper into the program, Scott explains how to work with music notation and score to video. He wraps up the course with extensive information on mixing, exporting, and sharing your final tracks. Topics include:
  • Exploring templates
  • Controlling playback
  • Making beats with Ultrabeat
  • Jamming on the iPad with Logic Remote
  • Recording MIDI in separate takes
  • Quantizing MIDI performances
  • Creating Apple Loops
  • Recording live performances

A decent DAW.. But..

I'm a proponent of both Logic Pro X and Avid Protools HD, as a blind producer, accessibility on the mac with VoiceOver is vital. Logic Pro X really does provide the most flexible interface possibe. However.. There are a number of things which really could be improved upon. These include giving the user the option to completely opt out of installing apple loops, apple instruments, etc and just using the plugins the customer owns, so just using Logic Pro X as the host and now a bulked up system, that'd save over 60gb storage space, etc. The ability for visually impaired users (those who can still see a display) to fully adjust colour profiles of Logic Pro X without third party products to do the same job. There's some other improvements which really could be considered here, but I will say this. Logic is an easier system to work with than Protools for setting up, etc, plus MIDI work is so much better. Just for information here, I am an experienced Studio tech working in the Accessibility in Music Technology Industry and there are many DAW developers who don't support screen reader technologies, especially VoiceOver, this needs to change.

solid and improved

Recent changes to the UI have been polished in 10.3.2 - text rendering has improved on non-retina display, and some strange bugs with third party plugins in 10.3 are gone in 10.3.2 (though I did have some issues with Omnisphere 1). Gradually one gets used to the updated UI - lighter and flatter than before, a little “iOS-ified”. Logic’s library of sounds keeps growing, and the included plugins, some of which go back to Logic 5, still are of outstanding quality and more than hold their own ground. Audio region processing (Functions -> Selection-based processing) is great, the A-B options are nice. The mixer has flexible time-saving routing. On a sufficiently fast computer Logic gets out of the way, and is reliable for long hours, and complex projects. Highly recommended.

Good, but insane MIDI handling.

Overall a competent DAW, and capable of producing commercial quality results. Though it has to be said there are better third party alternatives for many of the effects, the modulation fx especially are poor.
A good DAW if you do pretty much all your synth stuff 'in the box'. Once you get involved with multiple hardware synths or own a hardware sequencer or two things get frustrating real fast. Logic has a crazy way of handling MIDI inputs from hardware. Whatever bit of gear it comes from, whatever MIDI channel it’s on, Logic simply sums the lot together and sends it to all record-armed MIDI tracks which then record it all. So if your hardware sequencer sends on channel 1 and your Moog is on channel 2 then trying to use a soft synth on channel 3 means the sequencer simply over-records on all three tracks. As does the controller keyboard.
Pretty much every other DAW on the planet allows you to select MIDI hardware input ports a track at a time. Not Logic. It just sends all the incoming MIDI to all the tracks. If you can get your head around the MIDI 'environment' window you can stop that by forcing each controller to only operate one synth, but at the expense of needing a keyboard/controller for every synth AND not being able to record any MIDI at all, just audio.
So 3 stars.
