Equations in Algebra

You may wonder why there are some people in your class who often score high in math exams or any other tests involving computations. Well, besides the fact that there are those who really possess great analytical skill, there are some who rely on genius calculators!

In this article, I will show you how you can make better use of your CASIO calculator (i.e. solving equations for x) in 3 easy steps.

Calculators that has Solving Capacity

Unfortunately, not all Casio Calculators have the capacity to perform algorithms on equations. In other words, not all calculator has the function of solving for x.

In my case, I needed to purchase a new one just to get an edge in my Economic Statistics subject. Was it worth it? Well, yes! I got a considerably higher mark with the help of my amazing calculator. It was very useful in reducing careless errors. Plus, I was also able to use it in my other subjects as well like Business Math and Accounting.

How to Solve for X Using a Casio Calculator

Actually, this is fairly easy! But, to help you out in understanding how it works, let's use this equation: X2+X-6=0

  1. The first step is to input the equation in your casio calculator. To do this, press on ALPHA and press ')' or the button that has 'X' printed on top. Now, for the equal sign, just click on alpha again and search for the '=' sign (this is usually on top of the button CALC). Press on that button. Note: Do not confuse this with the '=' operation located on the bottom right of your calculator.
  2. We're getting closer to the answer! The next step would be to instruct your calculator to solve for the variable x. We do this by pressing SHIFT and then the button that has SOLVE on top. This is usually the CALC button. And then to confirm the instruction, just press on the equal button on the bottom right.
  3. Your calculator will now compute for the variable. All you need to do is to wait. For simple equations, it usually takes a fraction of a second, but for complex equations, it may take up to 10+ seconds.
After the wait, you should be getting something like the third photo wherein the answer is X=2. This will tell you if you've done it right!

Not all calculators can perform this trick, get one that does the trick - like this one! It's also better to input numbers and equations using this calculator due to its 'natural' feature.

Simple as 1-2-3

So, there you go! You now hold a powerful device that may serve as a key for an 'A' exam! It's up to you whether you'll share this with your friends or not. But, of course, it's preferred that you do.

  • thank for your articles

  • Hi, I wanted to ask whether there is way you can get the other answer for the variable which in this case is X=-3 which i found out by solving the equation on paper but my calculator wont give me the other answer after countless tries. Thanks :)

  • what if it keeps saying 2.236067977??? like in all the algebraic expressions I put in :(((

  • Although I already knew this, I can say that this is useful for new user of FX ES991 Casio Calculator.
